Chess Tourney in Jamaica Plain!

I love games. B I love poker, I love the Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and especially chess. B I have a group of friends with whom I play weekly at various bars in my neighborhood in Jamaica Plain. B I also help my friend, Dominic, mentor students at the Curley After School Program (C.A.S.P.) who electively come in to learn to play chess. B The kids range from 7 or 8 to 12-13. B This is my second year helping and Dominic’s third. B We’re hosting a little tournament, sponsored by us and Cafe Bartlett Square

This Saturday, October 5^th, CafC) Bartlett Square is hosting a blitz chess tournament at 2 pm as a fundraiser for the Curley K8 School.B B All ages are welcome.

 

HOW IT WILL BE PLAYED

The tournament is made up of 3-4 rounds of play.B In the first round, the players are divided into heats and each player will play against each other player twice, once as black and once as white.B Players are awarded 1 point for a win and a half point for a draw.B Once the first heat has completed its games, the top two point getters from each heat will advance to the next round of playoffs.B B Ultimately, two players will remain and play a best of three series to decide the winner.B B B 1^st and 2^nd place prizes will be awarded to the winners.B B 1^st place also includes an engraved trophy in your honor up on the library wall.

ENTERING THE TOURNAMENT

Registration starts at 2 pm and the games begin at 2:30 sharp.B The cost to enter the tournament is $10 (includes one complimentary coffee per player).B B The proceeds go to benefit the after school program at the Curley K8 (CASP).B B Anticipate about 2-2.5 hrs until the winner is decided.

WHAT IS BLITZ CHESS

Blitz chess is a faster version of chess.B B Each player has a total of 5 minutes per game, which can make the play very exciting.B B Players are responsible for hitting the button to stop the clock after completing each move.B B B A player wins by either checkmating his/her opponent, or if their opponentbs clock runs out.B B B Blitz chess is a fun way to play chess as mistakes are often made under the pressure of time, so you never know how itbs going to go.
